Why You Should Visit Herne Hill?
Herne Hill itself is a district in South London, sandwiched between Brixton, Tulse Hill, Dulwich and Loughborough Junction. About four miles south of Charring Cross, Herne Hill was originally part of the Manor of Milkwell which was part of the English landscape from as early 1291. Until the 18th century this manor was a disorganised mixture of farm and woodland until bought by a timber merchant - Samuel Sanders, in 1783 who started granting leases to wealthy families. Eight years later the first reference to Herne Hill was made and by the mid 19th century the arrival of the railway had completely transformed this sprawling areas from somewhere purely reserved for the upper classes to a premier district for the middle classes, boasting easy links to the city and the terraced streets which now characterise the suburb.
The area is home to the spacious Brockwell Park overlooked by the Brockwell Hall, built in 1831. In 1891 the lands and house were allowed to be opened to the public and now Brockwell Park is proudly remembered as the host of London`s Gay Pride festival for several years in the mid 1990`s.
The railway station which transformed this particular part of London was built in 1862 and is a fabulously decadent Gothic design and is yet another Grade II listed building in this famous district. The area also has a proud sporting heritage so if you are a sports buff you can take in the Velodrome which was built in 1891 for the following Olympics and also nearby in the same park the home of Crystal Palace FC for three years during the First World War.
To add to the history, Herne Hill even boasts a blue plaque, commemorating the birthplace of Sax Rohmer (aka Arthur Henry Ward), famous author of the Dr Fu Manchu novels. More recent famous residents are the comedian Andy Hamilton and Ed Simons, one half of the world famous dance act The Chemical Brothers.
