Bromley`s most documented contribution to history is as a sporting venue in 1735, when the Kent and London Cricket Clubs played out a cricket match on the common. The match report states that at least one person died in one of the first reported cases of mass hysteria at the site of a celebrity, as horses were startled by the swell of the crowd as HRH Fredick, Prince of Wales rode past; keen to take in the cricket. The common continued to host cricket throughout the 18th century, indeed boasting one of the strongest teams in England during the 1740`s and 50`s.

BR2 is also famous for having literary royalty, with Shortlands in particular boasting a staggering number of quality authors considering the size of the town. 19th century author and poet Dinah Craik lived there in a house built for her by architect Norman Shaw on Shortlands Road.
